International News: The central government has started the process of including Chhath Mahaparva in the UNESCO list. Rapid action is being taken on the historic initiative of the Chhathi Maiya Foundation. Chhath Mahaparva, a unique symbol of India's faith, environment, and cultural pride, is now moving towards international recognition. Accepting the first official demand of the Chhathi Maiya Foundation, the central government has issued instructions to the Sangeet Natak Academy (SNA) to immediately start the process of including this festival in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
The Ministry of Culture, Government of India, has issued the formal order through letter number F.No.U-11/134/2018-UNESCO dated 8 August 2025. The special guidance and support of Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has been important in this historic initiative.
In his address, the Foundation Chairman Mr. Sandeep Kumar Dubey said, "This is proof of the sensitivity of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Culture and their deep commitment towards the cultural heritage of India. Chhath is not just a festival but a unique tradition of faith, culture, and environmental protection. Its inclusion in the UNESCO list will be a matter of pride for both India and the overseas Indian community."
By being included in the UNESCO list, Chhath Mahaparva will get international cultural recognition, and tourism will increase, which will boost the local economy. International grants and support will be received for the preservation of the tradition. The cultural connection of Indians settled abroad will be strengthened. Along with this, the message of women's empowerment and environmental protection will reach the global level.
The letter demanding inclusion of Chhath Mahaparva in UNESCO's cultural heritage has been forwarded by the Government of India for further action. It is expected that it will be included in the list soon.
